FAQs about HD Radio

HD broadcasting has come to FM 89! HD Radio (also known as "In-Band On-Channel" and Digital Radio) provides a clean, crisp CD-quality sound. You can now hear your favorite KUAR programs in a whole new way. No more fading out of the signal just when an important news story or jazz piece comes on! No more static, hiss or audio distortion.

Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions about HD radio:

What does HD Radio mean to me?
HD Radio is a groundbreaking new digital technology that produces the highest quality audio available. With HD Radio, you'll hear crystal clear reception and CD-quality sound.

How is HD Radio different from regular radio?
The new technology effectively eliminates noise, interference and fades (also known as multipath interference) from our FM signal. If you've experienced static on a standard radio at home or while driving around town, you'll appreciate the clear, consistent sound HD Radio delivers.

What does HD radio mean for me as a listener of KUAR?
In addition to the crystal clear reception for KUAR HD, this new technology will allow us to add secondary channels -- additional streams of programming available on the HD receiver.

We will start by launching KUAR HD2, which will broadcast Spanish programming, including BBC Mundo, the Spanish-language edition of the British Broadcasting Corporation's World Service, along with locally produced Spanish news and programming. We expect to bring KUAR HD2 on the air before the end of this calendar year.

What do I need to get started?
You will need to purchase a digital radio. HD Radios are more widely available every month. Kenwood, JVC, Panasonic, Alpine, and Sanyo are among a few major manufacturers with car units. BMW also has a factory-installed receiver available now. Table-top models are being produced by Boston Acoustics and PolkAudio.
