KUAR / KLRE: Internships
Success Stories

Marcey Evans

"At KUAR, I learned how to write for broadcast, how to operate a switchboard, and what constitutes solid reporting. With a patient crew to help me, I learned foundational skills on which I could build a broadcast career.

Today, I host a local talk show in Memphis, Tennessee, on C19-TV, Memphis City Schools’ local cable station. I also work at WPTY ABC24/ WLMT CW30 as an Assignment Editor, finding news and sending reporter/photographer teams to cover it."

Chris Van Deusen

“My internship was one of my first looks inside a radio station. I learned who did what and how it all fit together. It gave me a chance to get comfortable in a studio behind a microphone. Even the best classroom training in the world is no substitute for being in the room when that red light goes on.

Since my internship, I've worked full-time as a reporter and news anchor at commercial news radio stations across the country. For the last four years, I've worked for the State of Texas as the Central Texas spokesman for the Department of Family and Protective Services in Austin. I'm still an avid public radio listener and a member of my local station.”

Internship Opportunities at KUAR/KLRE

We seek talented people to work in internship positions throughout our organization.  As a part of a teaching institution, we value the opportunity to work with people who are interested in knowing more about public radio.

Interns learn a variety of skills like:

  • Digital audio editing
  • On-air announcing
  • Studio operation
  • Interviewing
  • Writing for newscasts
  • Producing feature segments
  • Posting content on the web
  • Classical music hosting
  • Fund raising for a non-profit

There are three types of internships offered: community, college and high school. These are unpaid positions that generally last a few months to a year. Some internships lead to part-time paid positions or even a full-time position.

Community Internships

Community internships are appropriate for anyone who is interested in learning about various aspects of public radio. The internship requires a minimum of 5 hours per week.  It may be used to enhance skills already acquired or to explore an area of interest in broadcasting or non-profit development.

College Internships

College internships may be taken for credit or as additional learning to college coursework. They are intended as a supplement to formal education.

College interns usually are enrolled in UALR, UCA or one of the other colleges in the central Arkansas area.  Or, sometimes they are students who study out-of-state but are home for summer or winter break and looking to expand their resume.

This internship requires a minimum of 4 hours per week.

High School Internships

The high school internships are part of the curriculum of the high schools.  Usually, a member of the high school faculty recommends the student for an internship with public radio.  Currently, we coordinate with Parkview High School for the Performing Arts and with Central High School in Little Rock.  These internships are usually a year long, but in special cases may be only a semester.
