Ark Auditor: Unclaimed Items to be Auctioned on eBay

The state auditor's office says more than 20 years worth of unclaimed property will be put into an eBay auction starting this Friday.

The items were stored in bank safe deposit boxes then turned over to the state when the owners didn't claim them after the rental period on the box expired. Deputy Auditor of State Janet Harris says once the auction is over, the state will hold the proceeds.

"The money is held in trust by the Auditor of State, and it will be held in trust for the original owner if he or she or her heirs are ever found, they can come forward and we’ll reimburse them with a check," says Harris.

Harris says it's never too late to claim abandoned property.

"It’s very important to know that the right to claim your abandoned property is never extinguished in the state of Arkansas," says Harris. "We will be making one last attempt for every piece of property that we sell on eBay; we will be making one last attempt to contact the original owner."

The auctions will be held on the last Friday of every month. Some of the items up for auction will include old coins, baseball cards and jewelry.
